| Save the Boobies...Save the World |
[Apr. 10th, 2009|05:44 pm] |
I don't know a lot of people personally from LiveJournal, but as this is an important subject for women (and men) all over the world, I felt I could make a plea here.
This past year, two women very close to me were diagnosed with breast and uterine cancer. They are both currently receiving treatment and care. I have been in awe of their strength and courage, and now, I am finally able to do something more than just stand at the sidelines and watch helplessly as they endure arduous rounds of surgery, radio, chemo, and hormone therapy.
On September 11, 2009, I will be walking in the 30 km event at the Princess Margaret Hospital's Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
This annual event draws thousands of people every year and encourages them to raise funds for breast cancer and other women's cancer research and therapies.
As a participant, I am required to raise a minimum of $1,250.00, but I hope to raise more.
I'm asking anyone and everyone to please donate whatever you can at my web page.
It'll only take 13 donors contributing $100 each to get me to my goal....or 25 people donating $50...or 50 people donating $25. But any and all donations are welcome, and you will receive a tax receipt for donations over $10 CDN.
If, like me, you know someone who's been touched by cancer, or you yourself are a cancer patient or survivor, then you know that the battle can and must be won against this terrible disease. Any contribution, even if it's just $5, is greatly appreciated, and if you can tell you friends and family to help, too, I would be sincerely grateful.
The last day for donations in September 14, 2009. So if you're thinking of donating and just aren't sure if you can, try putting aside $2 a week until September. Like I said, any amount is welcome!
I'll be posting regularly about breast cancer on my blogger blog to keep you all apprised as I train for what is surely going to be the longest and possibly the hardest walk of my life. I haven't been in great shape or health lately, despite my youthful outward appearance, but I'm committed and I want to do this, even if I can't do the 2-day event. Like the web site says, walking is easy, cancer isn't.
Until then, please visit and give what you can:
All the best, and thanks for your support.

I tag:
rashaka
Rules: 1. People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question. 2. Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.
1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up.
A purple plastic tumbler. A receipt for a top and a pair of black tights I got at the discount store, total bill: $10.15 Cdn. My engagement ring. My Eee PC. Canadian Tire money valued at 5 cents. 2. How do you style your hair?
According to gravity. 3. What are you wearing now?
Pajamas from Marks Work Wearhouse. I got them for Christmas.
4. What do you want to be when you grow up?

Durian milkshake and Vietnamese vermicelli with spring rolls and BBQ pork.
9. What calms you?
The cry of seagulls on the first warm days of spring.
10. What websites do you visit when you go online?
This is an absurd question to ask. What DON'T I go to?
11. What's the last thing you bought?
Top from WInners.
12. What are you listening to now?
My fiancee brushing his teeth. 13. What do you think about before you go to bed?
If I breathe, the monster will get me, if I breathe the monster will get me.... 14. What was the last CD you bought?
Neko Case's Middle Cyclone 15. What is your favorite weather and why?
Fall, 20 Celcius, scattered clouds.
16. If you could play any musical instrument, which one would you play?
Accordion. 17. Anything exciting as of late?
SPOOOOOOOON!!! (yeah, that's about as exciting as it gets...)
18. What's something you'd like to say to someone right now?
How'd you get that knife stuck in your skull?
19. If you could go back in time and change 3 things (in your life), what would you change? Make sure to tell me about gravity before age 3. That would help with the other two brain-injury-related items.

| Free books for tough economic times! |
[Feb. 24th, 2009|10:40 am] |
To celebrate its 60th anniversary, Harlequin Enterprises is offer 16 free full books for download!
Now, some of you might turn their nose up at the romance genre, chalking them up to the bodice rippers your spinster aunt used to read. But at $1.2 billion in sales annually, this is the most popular genre of writing in the industry, and the stigma around it is wholly unjustified. Romance now includes a wide variety of sub-genres such as paranormal and fantasy, historical, erotic, inspiration Christian fiction, and at Harlequin, even a NASCAR-branded line for lovers of racing.
You owe it to your literary education to read the stuff that sells! Especially for any fanfiction writer looking to write a "real" book one day!

It's been one of the best weeks of my life!!
One:
I'm engaged!
The love of my life, John, proposed to me last Friday while we were at the Canadian National Exhibition (big annual fair in Toronto). We're both really happy. No date set--we're going to enjoy a nice long engagement. Read the whole story on my blog.
Two:
I'm an aunt again! I have a new nephew, born this morning at 6 lbs. 5 oz.
Avery Hendrix Kwong is doing well, as is my sister, his mommy. The family is very happy. Even Avery's older sister, Bowie, at 18 months, seems to be accepting him. Of course, we'll just have to wait and see once they bring him home and she has to share everyone's attention with him....
Three:
FanExpo starts tomorrow! I expect the Avatar cosplayers to come out en force.
Four:
Sunday's my berfday! I iz turningz 29!
Everything's coming up Vicki! |

My thoughts on the end of Avatar, and my thanks to the creators and the fandom for everything they've done for me.

| In which I expound upon the obvious in Dr. Horrible.... |
[Jul. 19th, 2008|10:57 am] |
Warning: Spoilers for Dr. Horrible
Rashaka makes some interesting points about the finale to Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, but I feel it was a perfectly Whedonesque ending and one that, while perhaps a little abrupt, was exactly what was called for in this story. The character and story strengths in Buffy, Angel and Firefly are all based on the idea that a bad guy isn't all bad, and a good guy isn't all good. Everyone lands in shades of grays. Such is the case with Dr. Horrible who is, in fact, not horrible at all.
Nothing about what Rashaka said is wrong. I tend to agree with her. But there is a comfort associated with storytelling tropes. I thought Dr. Horrible's ending was a fitting one, and true to Whedon's brand of tragedy. (See Tara, season 6)

"Oh, no. Another fan with ideas..." *Kisses Mike and Bryan and all the writers*
THANK YOU.
Because a writer who listens to their fans (and then heartily mocks them) is a writer who will continue to eat for years to come. |

x-posted on my blog REJECTED AGAIN!!!
Hello! Thank you so much for your submission to the Tickle My Fantasy anthology. I’m sorry to tell you that your story was not selected. I had a lot of really great submissions, and it was a very, very tough decision. Ultimately, the stories I chose fit better with the direction I wanted to take the anthology. I’m sorry I don’t have better news, but I thank you for thinking of Samhain, and I wish you the very best of luck with your writing.
Thanks! Laurie Laurie M. Rauch, Editor Samhain Publishing, Ltd.; "It's all about the story.” www.samhainpublishing.com
I'm not actually that surprised about this one. I didn't think my submission was up to snuff, though I'd worked pretty diligently on it for three months straight. But it was a fun (read: excruciatingly painful) learning process. And now I know I can write to deadline if need be.
Thanks to the fabulous and always talented Moor and Loveroftheflame for beta reading. (I owe you cookies) |

It occurred to me that my second book, Star Attraction, is done and languishing on my hard drive.
Sooooo... Who wants to beta read? I'd give you until September 1st to read about 65,000 words with your comments.
As usual, you will get credited in the acknowledgments page when I get published...one day...I hope...
And I'll send goodies to you and you shall forever be immortalized.
Email me at vicki_so@yahoo.com if you're interested! |

| WRITING HALP!!! |
[May. 23rd, 2008|11:48 pm] |
Complete this sentence:
"Wow, you’re radiating more angst than_________________________________"
It's not for an ATLA related story, so don't say "Zuko."
For some reason, I can't come up with anything. Bone dry. Creativity: 0. |

| Pimping my blog... |
[May. 12th, 2008|09:56 pm] |
It occurs to me that I haven't officially mentioned I host a "real" blog called Of No Import.
If you like useless fun, or want to read about updates to my writing career, etc., that's where I post a lot of my stuff. Eventually, it'll become a more professional writer's blog, but mostly, I just put up a lot of silliness. Because I like silliness. |

| Dotmoon Best of Fandom Voting Time! |
[May. 12th, 2008|07:31 pm] |
The Game was awarded an honorary mention in 2007 on Dotmoon.net's Universal Fanfiction Open contest, and has been nominated for a best of in the ATLA category this year!
Not to beg, but will you vote for me? Please? Or at least read the other entrants' work and pick...because democracy can't exist without you!
Thanks for all the fishes,
Vicki.
P.S. In the Family Way is coming along...but I've been a little swamped lately with other projects. I'm hoping to post a new chappie up this weekend! |

| Do Not Want, Part Two |
[May. 1st, 2008|10:29 pm] |
So.
I got rejected...again. This time, it was from The Wild Rose Press:
Again, not as bad as it could be. At this point, though, I'm definitely going to do a revision...but not for a while. I've got other projects to work on and things I need to finish. Also, I'm exhausted and my creative juices are at an all-time low, so I need to do something that isn't reading and writing romance.
That probably means more fanfic and TV. 8 )
Good thing Battlestar Galactica is back on... |

| Thoughts for an overactive mind: ON CAPSLOCKING |
[Feb. 29th, 2008|09:50 pm] |
Once upon a time, I became a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
On behalf of the fandom:
Sifu Kisu, if you're reading this, know that we love you and your work, and we heartily respect you, even if we kinda make fun of what you do for us and for the show we've come to worship. Please don't kill us.
Same goes for Bryan and Mike--we love you guys like the two older brothers we all hate because you're so damn good at what you do. Mom and Dad will always love you two best. |
